Our Board

Our governing body is known as the Board of Trustees and comprises between 10 and 15 trustees at any one time. Meeting a minimum of four times per year the Board take decisions to secure and develop Sense Scotland. In addition to Board meetings, trustees also attend committee meetings. There are currently seven committees:

Trustees

Trustees are normally appointed for a four-year term. Around half of our trustees are related to people we support.

Suzanne is a parent trustee and a strong advocate for those we support.

Angela
Clements

Angela and her husband Ian became involved with Sense Scotland in 2010 when their eldest son Andrew, who requires 24/7 care due to his Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD), transitioned from a SEN school where she was Chair of the Parent Council for over 15 years. Andrew has three younger siblings, Fiona, Peter and Christopher.

Angela has worked as an Enterprise & IT Director across both the public and private sector for over 25 years, and a Local Authority Chief Officer for much of this time.

Angela has been a Trustee and Deputy Treasurer for Sense Scotland since June 2014, and has been Chair of the Board since September 2020. Angela is also the Chair of the Governance and Remuneration Committees and a member of the Nominations and Finance Committees, as well as Chair of a Sustainability & Rapid Response Committee from the start of the pandemic.  Angela was instrumental in establishing TouchBase Ayrshire in 2017.

Adam is the Chair of the Sense Scotland External Affairs Committee, and is a member of the Finance, Nominations, Governance and Mecoco committees.

Dr John Richards MBE

Martha
Shortreed

Martha is a parent of a young woman who is sensory impaired and who has additional support needs, and who is supported by Sense Scotland.

After gaining extensive experience within social work in 2005 Martha was employed as a senior social work inspector with the Social Work Inspection Agency. When in 2011 this agency merged with the Care Inspectorate she became a strategic inspector where she remained until she retired.

During Martha’s time within social work she was also employed by a number of Scottish universities supporting students, was a member on examination boards and was a Due Regard Member with SSSC.

During her professional career Martha was fortunate in being able to participate in a number of national initiatives which included development of the Scottish Carers Strategy and development and implementation of Scottish Carers Act.

As well as gaining business studies qualifications Martha completed her MPhil in child protection and brings her experience of public protection to her post as Trustee as well as her passionate interest in workforce development.

Martha is a member of the Sense Scotland Audit and Risk Committee and Quality Assurance Subgroup.
