Keeping the people we support safe

In accordance with Sense Scotland’s core values, we are fully committed to safeguarding the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults, and recognise our responsibilities to all those we support and the wider community.

How do we safeguard?

Our safeguarding policy lays out the steps we will take to ensure that the people we support are kept safe from harm. This includes guidance for our staff, the people we support, and their parents and carers.

Safeguarding guidance for staff

Thorough checks are conducted as part of our Safer Recruitment process to ensure the suitability and credibility of new staff.

During induction, staff are made aware of their safeguarding responsibilities, and are encouraged to:

  • Work together to develop an ethos which embraces equality and diversity and respects the rights of all people
  • Develop their skills and knowledge, particularly in relation to the care and protection of children, young people, and vulnerable adults
  • Keep up-to-date with national developments relating to the care and protection of children, young people, and vulnerable adults

Safeguarding guidance for people we support

All people using our services are enabled and encouraged to express their ideas and views on a wide range of issues and have access to the organisation’s Comments, Compliments and Complaints Policy.

Safeguarding guidance for parents and carers

Parents and carers are encouraged to be involved in the work of the organisation and to have access to all policies and procedures if they wish.

What if a safeguarding incident occurs?

In the event that a concern is raised regarding the safety of someone we support, strict procedures are followed in order to act in a proportionate manner, keeping the best interests of the person supported prioritised.

Reporting an incident

If harm is witnessed or suspected, Sense Scotland staff have a duty to report this to their manager or to contact the Sense Scotland Safeguarding phone line. If you believe the person is at immediate risk, staff should inform the police on 999. If you think the person needs medical attention, staff should phone for an ambulance on 999. After telling someone, staff must then complete an Accident and Incident form.

Follow-up actions

Senior staff will then follow our safeguarding procedures, which will include informing parents and carers, local authorities, Care Inspectorate and completion of all other relevant documents.
