ASDAN Awards

ASDAN Awards are recognised programmes that offer a flexible way of recognising personal development.

Some of the awards presented to our members include ‘Meal Preparation and Cooking’, ‘Using Transport’ and ‘Coping With People’ – everyday things that many of us take for granted but present great challenges for the people we support.

We offer a number of different programmes, but find that ‘Towards Independence’ is the most popular.

Towards Independence

This is an activity-based learning plan through which personal, social and independence skills can be developed and accredited.

The programme offers formal recognition for small steps of achievement towards a larger goal.

The initial module, ‘Starting Out’, is mandatory and helps the learner to recognise achievements and identify learning challenges and targets.

There are more than 70 modules to choose from including Meal Preparation and Cooking, Using Transport and Sound, Rhythm and Music.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Sense Scotland are an accredited Duke of Edinburgh Award Centre. From April 2023, we will be running groups in which young people will be able to participate.

The award is for young people aged 14-24, they can complete the DofE programme at one of three progressive levels which, when successfully completed, leads to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

There are four sections to complete at Bronze and Silver level and five at Gold. They involve helping the community/environment, becoming fitter, developing new skills, planning, training for and completing an expedition and, for Gold only, working with a team on a residential activity.

Any young person can do their DofE – regardless of ability, gender, background or location. Achieving an Award isn’t a competition or about being first. It’s all about setting personal challenges and pushing personal boundaries.

Through a DofE programme, young people have fun, make friends, improve their self-esteem and build confidence. They gain essential skills and attributes for work and life such as resilience, problem-solving, team-working, communication and drive, enhancing young people’s experience.

We deliver the award in groups of 4 or 5 young people, which allows young people to meet others and build new relationships, but also adds to the memories and experience created by taking part in the award.
