Sensatronic Lab is an experimental music art technology project.

Sensatronic Lab aims to make digital music accessible to all, run by a team of digital artists and musicians. We have established a way of working that includes live performances, tailored workshops and digital instruments that are inclusive, tactile and fun for all ages and abilities.

"Quite remarkable. I didn’t know instruments could be so user-friendly for people with sensory difficulties."

"It was amazing how you can make simple sounds and beats which all built together to make music."

The project works with people of all ages and backgrounds to explore music and creativity through the use of innovative multi-sensory digital activities and instruments.

One of the main aims of the Sensatronic Lab is to conceive and build new kinds of digital musical instruments, sound-producing objects and installations. Through explorations of physical materials, sound and interaction we have developed a number of prototype instruments that are accessible to all. You can explore some of our creations below.

Instruments

Beatza Box

The Beatza Box is an attempt at reverse engineering: take all the power of a phone or tablet, hide it in a box and allow people to tap, scratch, bash or drum to their heart’s content.

Have you got an old phone or tablet? This amazingly simple and effective instrument can be re-created by anyone pretty cheaply.

Video Table

The video table combines state-of-the-art video projection with basic interaction and a world of amazing sounds. Ideal for groups or pairs of people to work together.

Techno Wheel

Originally developed as part of a junk orchestra, the Techno Wheel has been constantly refined, re-made and re-played!

On one side you can spin it (to control the tempo) and on the other, you can re-program the sequence of notes. If you want to get more technical, the tiny Arduino-based synth is very hands-on for tuning and editing the sound.

Bungee Bass

An unwieldy combination of office furniture, bungee ropes, hi-fi equipment and complicated programing, the Bungee Bass emerged from workshops using stretchy materials to make sounds, vibrations and connections between people.

Workshops and Events

Sensatronic Lab runs workshops, events and training sessions with a range of partners throughout Scotland.

If you are interested in getting involved with Sensatronic Lab, you can find a list of all our upcoming events below.

The Sensatronics

The Sensatronics is a performance group led by some of the young people who have participated in Sensatronic Lab. They incorporate some of the instruments and original pieces they have created throughout the year.

At Sense Scotland, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to achieve their goals and realise their ambitions. The Sensatronics are doing this through co-creative music sessions and live gigs and performances in mainstream venues and events across Scotland.

The Sensatronics play and experiment with our home-designed multi-sensory digital and electronic instruments, from weekly music sessions where everyone has a voice in influencing the direction of improvised soundscapes, music and compositions, to live gigs where they enjoy an outlet and platform to showcase their new work and creative achievements.

The Sensatronics have performed at the major music festival ‘Doune the Rabbit Hole’, a -3day major music and arts festival near Callander with 12,000 revellers in a beautiful countryside setting in the Trossachs. They have also performed at Glasgow’s SWG3 and as part of Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games’ cultural events. This is crucial as it gives the musicians great recognition as bona fide, fee-paid artists – inclusion at its best.

The group has diverse musical tastes, but share an enthusiasm for creating and performing music. The group’s style has been described as ‘atmospheric’, ‘experimental’, and ‘dancey’. Their friendship has supported each member to cope with major life events including loss of family members and the COVID pandemic. Most importantly, they have been able to express their emotions without necessarily verbalising them. That’s the power of music – and the power of our Sensatronic Lab project.
