Big Impact

Over the last 35 years at Sense Scotland, we have gained expertise in using the arts as a tool for communication and expression aiming to improve the quality of life of the people who use our services.

Why music?

Because of the isolating nature of their impairments, deafblind and disabled people can be very limited in terms of communication, interaction and expression of their thoughts and feelings.

However, music can provide them with a stimulating and pleasurable medium through which they begin to explore their abilities rather than be limited by their disabilities.

Indeed there is a huge body of research that demonstrates that communicative musicality is at the root of all human communicative and language development.

Children’s music

We offer a programme of music sessions which enable children who have additional support needs to learn through musical and expressive play. These sessions can help to inspire and stir curiosity, confidence, creativity and imagination towards.

Learning within this project will be rooted in experiential activity. It is well documented that taking part in music activities in the early years develops phonological awareness, speech-in-noise perception, rhythm perception, auditory working memory and sound pattern learning.

The evidence indicates that expressive arts and design play an important role in supporting children’s learning across a range of areas, as well as PSED (Personal, Social and Emotional Development).

Structured music programmes also foster self-regulation in the early years, and shared music-making plays a role in mother-infant bonding (Fancourt & Finn, 2019) which is key in building children’s resilience.

Children taking part in artist-led arts activities also tend to demonstrate increased initiative and confidence, as well as growth in creativity, innovation, empathy, and resilience. Furthermore, he arts support the development of communication and pro-social skills, and motivate children to learn (Pascal, Bertram, & Rouse, 2019).

Lyrical

Lyrical is a new programme of workshops exploring accessible, interactive and diverse approaches to music through song appreciation and songwriting.

We are all affected emotionally by songs and music, and these experiences are deeply related to our own unique and personal identity.

We all have a story to tell, and we support participants to articulate their own stories through the creation of individualised and collective songs.

Schools

Our schools music programme sessions offer innovative opportunities for young people to experience and extend their own creative and expressive abilities. We use a wide range of multi-sensory activities and instruments to suit individual needs, using voice, body movement, percussion, drums, guitars, stringed instruments, synthesisers, and specialised electronic sensory equipment.

Attuning to each participant’s unique abilities and interests, we will sensitively support individuals to develop their wider expressive potential and ability to co-create together with peers in group work.

Sensatronic Lab

Sensatronic Lab is a unique project developed to enable people with additional support needs to make digital music.

The programme presents participants with vital, tailored opportunities to express themselves, participate in music activities with others, and develop their own ideas and ways of communicating them through innovative multi-sensory creative experiences.

Vocal Tones

The Vocal Tones sessions provide a space for participants to explore vocal expression and their fuller creative voice potential through music and improvisation.

Attuning to each participant’s unique voice in a safe environment and sensitively supporting their wider vocal potential, tutors will use musical instruments to inspire vocal expression (non-verbal and verbal) through a range of activities including melodic singing.
