Milestone reached – but still a long way to go

Generous donors have helped Sense Scotland reach the £60,000 mark in their Urgent Appeal for funds during the Coronavirus crisis.

But the charity warned there is still a significant shortfall in income due to the closure of their shops and the impact of the crisis on fundraising activities.

“We stand by the most vulnerable in our society,” said Head of Fundraising Jen Niven, “and others have stood by us by giving to our Urgent Appeal. We are overwhelmed, not only by the donations, but by the good wishes and the words of encouragement. People are motivated for all different reasons to help – it is truly humbling and we’d like to thank each and every one of them for that.”

One lady – who was due to celebrate her 80th birthday with her first-ever cruise – donated the £300 deposit when the holiday was cancelled. Others have shaved their hair, cycled laps round their house, or simply sent an online donation to support the charity to make up for lost income.

But Jen said there was still a way to go: “We expect a £1 million loss due to the impact of the crisis on our fundraising activities and shop sales. So the Appeal will certainly continue, and we hope to celebrate further milestones along the way.”
