Matt Art “Under the Sea” Greetings Card

This is a print from an original canvas painting, by Sense Scotland young artist Matthew Goode. It is the second painting Matthew created at home during lockdown. This was a co-production made over several weeks with support from his care team. By this time, Sense Scotland was not only offering an art session each week for Matthew, but they would also send out art materials to him at home, so they could be incorporated into the session.

This was another experiment, Matthew had shown he enjoyed the sound of the canvas vibrating, and so we gave him a wooden board canvas to work with. This was a solid structure, so it made quite good sounds.

It is a vibrant quite crazy structured piece, almost semi-sculptural using modelling clay for all the 3D bright creatures which were painted individually, then stuck on. Different objects were sought out from the kitchen drawers to make patterns on the clay when it was soft. The yellow object (top left) has the look of a jellyfish! The creatures appear to come from deep down in the ocean.

The various modelling clay shapes were then left to dry. You can also see some pine needles on the canvas (in the centre), collected from the garden. Feathers were used again too. The clay shapes that have the round holes within (centre left and upper right) were made using a meat tenderiser, taken from the kitchen drawer! Sense had encouraged the team to be imaginative and creative in their use of tools.
