Matt Art “Red Graffiti” Greetings Card

This is a print from an original canvas “Red Graffiti” by Sense Scotland young artist Matthew Goode, working with Sense Scotland artist Gayle Calderwood, who explains how they created this piece:

Each week we would try different ways of applying ink, paint and other materials to the red canvas. We started with watery acrylic paint in tubs using the canvas as a drum so the vibrations caused them to spill and fall over. One big thump and they bounced right off onto the floor. Matthew found this hilarious.

We worked on the canvas in many ways, going with the flow set by Matthew. This included: sensory balls to move paint around leaving dots; slip trailers usually used for ceramics were filled with paint and squashed and banged to set jets of ink flying; sponges stuffed into the toes of tights so that once dipped in paint they could hit the canvas like little slings; space blankets rolled into balls with our hands buried into them squashing and moving to make sound and move the paint; lengths of wood or plastic beads pulled through paint to make patterns and leave texture; air drying clay to build surface texture and add different colours as it collected.

Alongside all the messy noisy fun, the sessions were punctuated by singing, talking and vocalisations to further create energy and to help form some structure for Matthew and to support him in predicting what was coming next. This was very important, due to Matthew’s visual impairment, as the anticipation was often as much fun as the activity itself.
