Keeping the people we support safe
In accordance with Sense Scotland’s core values, we are fully committed to safeguarding the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults, and recognise our responsibilities to all those we support and the wider community.
How do we safeguard?
Our safeguarding policy lays out the steps we will take to ensure that the people we support are kept safe from harm. This includes guidance for our staff, the people we support, and their parents and carers.
Safeguarding guidance for staff
Thorough checks are conducted as part of our Safer Recruitment process to ensure the suitability and credibility of new staff.
During induction, staff are made aware of their safeguarding responsibilities, and are encouraged to:
- Work together to develop an ethos which embraces equality and diversity and respects the rights of all people
- Develop their skills and knowledge, particularly in relation to the care and protection of children, young people, and vulnerable adults
- Keep up-to-date with national developments relating to the care and protection of children, young people, and vulnerable adults
Safeguarding guidance for people we support
All people using our services are enabled and encouraged to express their ideas and views on a wide range of issues and have access to the organisation’s Comments, Compliments and Complaints Policy.
Safeguarding guidance for parents and carers
Parents and carers are encouraged to be involved in the work of the organisation and to have access to all policies and procedures if they wish.
What if a safeguarding incident occurs?
In the event that a concern is raised regarding the safety of someone we support, strict procedures are followed in order to act in a proportionate manner, keeping the best interests of the person supported prioritised.
Reporting an incident
If harm is witnessed or suspected, Sense Scotland staff have a duty to report this to their manager or to contact the Sense Scotland Safeguarding Phone Line.
Informing the parent or carer
There is a duty on staff to inform the parent(s) or carer(s) of the person involved as soon as possible, unless there is suspicion that a family member or carer is involved in the suspected abuse or harm. Guardians will be informed of the incident and what actions have been taken and why.
Supporting the affected individual
Following the reported concerns, Sense Scotland staff will offer support to the individual and seek external guidance as appropriate.
