Francis’s story

Francis has his own home in Dundee and receives support from Sense Scotland staff on a daily basis. Francis writes his own songs and Sense Scotland has enabled him to make a CD as well as giving him an opportunity to perform.

He was invited to attend the launch of the exhibition ‘What Presence! The Rock Photography of Harry Papadopoulos’ at The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum. As one of Scotland’s legendary music photographers, Harry captured some fantastic images of legendary performers including David Bowie, Joy Division, Bryan Ferry, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Wham!, ABC and fellow Scots artists like Orange Juice, Aztec Camera, Josef K and The Bluebells.

Francis attended the launch along with support staff Naila and Mike as well as David McCluskey, Sense Scotland’s Music Tutor and drummer with the Bluebells, who feature in the exhibition. He was very impressed with the exhibition, enjoyed the live performances and posed alongside some of the photographs of much admired artists.

Francis said:

“I liked those pictures of the rock stars I know of…Marc Almond, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, the make-up and the poses. I’ve got lots of charisma as well”

Francis’s support worker Mike McCord, who also attended, said:

“Francis loved this event, really studying the images of rock stars. He totally identifies with these flamboyant characters. He was in his element and the fact that he was invited to the preview, opening night  made it even more special. He rose to the occasion and loved the whole sense of social occasion, meeting people and talking about his own songs and music.”

“I really enjoyed this exhibition too. There were so many photos of bands that I was into from the late 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. It was great to share this with Francis, then to watch the live bands.”
