Our Siblings Group had a fantastic time at this year’s Young Carers Festival – a camping festival for young carers all over Scotland.
The festival is a free event, funded by the Scottish Government and organised by Carers Trust in Scotland. The aim is to give young carers respite, support and lots of fun!
It was a fantastic three days filled with activities such as a talent show, live bands, dj-ing and even a silent disco.
Laura Houston, Family Advisor said: “The SYCF event is the finale of what has been an amazing summer for our Sibling Group, with six days of activities, from a windy day on Ayr Beach to a day out at the Climbing Academy. Our 25 participants have had a ball and made new friends!”
Charlie drums with Clanadonia
The highlight of the festival was when one of our siblings, Charlie got upon stage with Clanadonia for the Finale of the SYCF drumming.
Laura added: ” What a star! They all are! Amazing kids you just can’t help being enthused with their energy!”
The chance to speak up
On the final day, we were joined by MPs, councillors and health officials where young carers got the chance speak to them and let them know about life as a young carer.
Laura added: “One of the main aims for me as a family advisory worker is to reduce the impact of having a disabled child on the family as a whole, and this event ticks all the boxes in terms of reducing the sibling carers isolation, increasing their skills and knowledge through new experiences, and mostly giving them some fun respite where they can just be kids!”
