Advice and support

Find out how our Family Advisors can help

The Advisory service is at the heart of Sense Scotland with the Family Advisers often the first point of contact for disabled people of all ages and their families.

Our Family Advisers, covering the whole of Scotland, can support you and your family with benefits advice, representation and how to cope with the transitions of life. Or maybe you just need someone to listen to you, in your home or at the end of a phone.

We can respond to families requests across Scotland, and are happy to arrange a home visit at a time that suits families and carers. We also have a Parent Enabler Project which can support families who live with in NHS Greater Glasgow area and care for disabled children up to the age of 19.

Advisory services can help you by:

  • Providing information and advice.
  • Helping you with the jargon - for example Personalisation and Self Directed Support
  • Identifying services and resources.
  • Looking at how to help with vision, hearing, mobility and learning.
  • Giving advice on learning and personal care.
  • Helping with communication and difficult behaviour.
  • Ensuring professionals are advised on the impact of communication support needs on the help you or your relative require.
  • Putting families and carers in touch with other families and professionals.
  • Accompanying you to formal meetings.
  • Answering your questions and concerns about education.
  • Giving you advice about the costs of support services and possible sources for funding.
