  • And anyone with an interest in communication

What is Makaton?

Some communication is through speaking to others. However, some people use different ways to communicate, like using Makaton symbols and signs.

When we speak, we often use extra tools to help the person we are communicating with understand what we are saying. For example, if we are asked for directions, we might point or draw a picture. These are clues to help provide more information.

Makaton uses speech with signs and symbols to help people communicate. It's designed to support spoken language (both to help understanding and expression) and the signs and symbols are used with speech in spoken word order.

Taster sessions

The Makaton taster session provides a general introduction into Makaton and those who use it. You'll learn approximately 30 signs and symbols.

The workshop is a fun, practical way to learn Makaton in order to communicate more effectively with people with learning disabilities or autism.
