Young people get animated

15 December 2018

The "exciting and scary" experience of leaving school is the subject of a short film which received its premiere in Dundee.

The collaboration between the charity Sense Scotland and Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA) saw the work of the 'One Giant Leap Dundee' group hit the big screen on Saturday, December 15th at the DCA.

The film blends live interviews and animation and showcases the thoughts, ideas, fears and hopes of the group's young people, all of whom have additional support needs.

Margaret MacKenzie from Sense Scotland explained: "The One Giant Leap programme is for people we support who are making the leap from school to adult life. Because of their situation members of the group sometimes find it harder to be part of the decisions that their families, schools and social work make about them and what they will do when they leave school.

"They wanted to make a short film about this and applied for funding from BT and from Year of Young People 2018 to make it happen."

DCA Learning team was approached to work with the group to develop film-making, model-making and animation techniques and the result is a short film entitled 'Our Transitions Story'.

Andrew Low, Learning Coordinator at DCA, said: "The participants and staff have been absolutely wonderful to work with, understanding the commitment needed to make the project work and giving their all at every stage.

"The young people themselves (project participants) leapt at the opportunity to get involved and within moments of meeting we all started off on the film making journey together...and now, at the other end of the process we have seen the work on the big screen at DCA!"

The young people involved enjoyed being behind the camera whilst others were fascinated by the stop/start animation process.

One said: "I enjoyed the technical aspects of the video, like the voiceover and the animation."

Another added: "It was a different experience doing these videos. I liked expressing my experiences leaving school using animations and model."
