In an interview with Florida's Herald-Tribune, Roy, who is a part-time resident in the sunshine state, tells how his daughter Cheryl was born deafblind and about his fear she would live her life in an institution.

However, as a result of her own determination and the love and support she's received from her dad, mum Liz and older brother Glen, Cheryl lives independently, supported by Sense Scotland. She also swims, skis and plays in a band.

"She's building her own life now"

Roy, who was awarded and O.B.E. last year, said: "Cheryl has enhanced our lives no end. I worship her. I'm mad on her. I miss her. But she's building her own life now."
