There was a celebratory atmosphere as 140 guests gathered at our newest TouchBase in Hamilton, to greet The Princess Royal in the glorious autumn sunshine.

The Princess Royal, who is Sense Scotland's Patron, spent her visit talking to families and exploring the facilities before unveiling a plaque and declaring the newly refurbished TouchBase Lanarkshire officially open.

The Princess Royal was then presented with a beautiful posy by Margot Allan, who is supported at TouchBase Lanarkshire.

The official opening is a fantastic celebration of TouchBase Lanarkshire which boasts state of the art facilities for people with communication support needs. The facility has has doubled in size after an £850,000 refurbishment and now includes a sensory room, fully equipped music room and a dedicated art room.

We've also built a new extension which provides ample space for physio and physical activity sessions and includes a sunken trampoline, used for rebound therapy. A second building provides a large events space which can be used for drama performances, story-telling sessions and meetings, including staff training.

It's also home to a bespoke accessible kitchen, which offers the people we support the opportunity to develop their cooking skills and gain qualifications through Sense Scotland's ASDAN programme.

Future plans include a fully accessible sensory garden.

A very significant milestone

He added: "The development of TouchBase Lanarkshire is a very significant milestone in the history of Sense Scotland - it's our second TouchBase in Scotland and it will soon be joined by a TouchBase in Ayrshire and a fourth TouchBase hopefully in Dundee."
