Out and About

What is Out and About?

All children enjoy doing ordinary things in ordinary places given half the chance. Out and About supports them to do just that and to try out something they haven't done before. The primary objective of the service is to offer opportunities that may help your son or daughter access ordinary leisure activities while having their needs fully understood.

The service will support your son or daughter to go out and about in the local community to develop hobbies and interests which they may find difficult to access without support. Such interests could include Brownies, Scouts, swimming, horse riding etc.

Who can access the service?

Out and About is available for children up to 19 who live within the NHS Greater Glasgow area or within West Dunbartonshire. The service is appropriate for children who have communication support needs because of deafblindness, sensory impairment, learning and physical disabilities.

How can you access the service?

You can contact us directly via the Advisory department or speak to your social worker or health care provider who will contact us on your behalf.

An Out and About manager explains how they help:

"When we meet children we try to find out what their interests are, then set up a leisure programme which helps them pursue this interest."

Through Out and About, Siobhan and a support worker attended the Brownies. Parents Hammy and Anne are thrilled that Siobhan has fun and meets other girls:

"Out and About means that Siobhan can use local leisure facilities and get the opportunity to do the same things as other children."
