Building Blocks - an update on our new resource base
TouchBase
Our competition in September 2005 came up with a worthy new name. The winner was one of our supporters from Springburn in Glasgow, who very kindly donated the prize money back to us. The panel thought that the name encompassed our emphasis on communication, often through touch, and the resource's function as a base for moving to and from rather than as a centre for staying in. "Touching base" is something we all seem to do when we need to feel on firm ground or to seek inspiration. We are sure that people using our TouchBase in future years will find it such a place.
Still on target
Ashleigh Construction was the successful bidder for the construction work and began work at the end of 2005. Work is now well underway on phase two, building the resource base in the shell of the warehouse. The new floor is just about finished and most of the steel supporting structure for the mezzanine floors is in place. The lift to serve the three floors in the office block and two floors in the warehouse is to be installed soon. We expect the openings for the lift shaft to be made in the existing walls early in May.
Building works to the warehouse are likely to be complete by the end of the year. Remedial works to the first and second floors of the office block will form a later phase.
Stepping out
Yvonne Larkin and staff from our Durham Street resource base are doing the Great Scottish Walk on 18 June 2006 to raise funds for TouchBase.
This is just one example of Yvonne's efforts to help Sense Scotland. She is also involved in developing our community café at TouchBase.
All the best Yvonne!
Focus on the child and family suite
With an outdoor play area being created beside the child friendly playroom, the resource offers a great deal of flexibility for individual and group play sessions, functional assessment and family meetings.
There are also three well-appointed personal care suites complete with showers and two accessible toilets in the suite as these are facilities families told us were desperately needed and generally absent in the community at large...
Hard Hat Days
We'll be organising regular opportunities for groups of people to join us on site to check out the progress with the building work. You'll have to wear a hard hat, hence the name! If you are interested in joining the list for the hard hat days, please email contact:
