Lottery funded story teller project

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded our Arts and Wellbeing team a grant of £50,000. We have recently started supporting former residents of New Craigs in one of the last major resettlements from long stay hospital to independent living in the UK. The two-year project will preserve these people's life stories and follow their move towards supported living in the community.

Colin McLean, Regional Manager for HLF Scotland said, "This project will open many doors to draw attention to a particular aspect of the history of disabled people.

As part of the project we have emplyed a storyteller who, along with our Video Production Officer, will record these stories in a creative and visual fashion. There will also be two exhibitions taking place in Inverness and Glasgow, which will present these life stories.

Kevin Harrison our Arts and Wellbeing Manager added, "We are delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has recognised the significance of capturing the heritage and life histories of people leaving one of the last long-stay hospitals in Scotland. This is a unique opportunity to capture parts of people's lives that might be lost forever. It will also help people share the significance of these institutions and their transition towards moving into their own homes, for the first time."
