Shops break the £1 million mark to end the financial year on a high

Sense Scotland's charity shops, based across the country, have just reached the magnificent figure of £1million, during the financial year running 2002 - 2003, for the first time. The eleven shops take all kinds of donations, from clothing and accessories to CDs and romantic novels. Having run for over 16 years, the shops continue to expand with 2002 seeing new shops in St Andrews and Ayr. Pictured are Bette and Stuart behind the scenes at the Dumbarton Road shop.

Gillian Morbey, Chief Executive of Sense Scotland said:

"This is fantastic news which highlights the importance of our shops in supporting the organisation. However there is still much we can do as the people and families we support across Scotland continue to grow. I'd like to give a special thanks to all the shop staff and volunteers, some of whom have been with us from the very start. It's their hard work and enthusiasm as one of the public faces for Sense Scotland, which keep people visiting and supporting the shops. Huge thanks also to the public who come in and buy the goods and support the charity in the process."

Some facts and figures about Sense Scotland shops:

  • The first shop opened on the 6th August 1986 and in its early years Sense Scotland staff operated from an office, which was part of first shop in Dumbarton Rd, Glasgow.
  • In 1988 the shops made over £25,000.
  • Starting in 1986 with around 20 staff and volunteers, over 100 now work at the shops
  • Since 1996 shops have increased in number from 3 to 11 across Scotland.
