Helen Keller International Award shortlist announced
Change of closing date for the Helen Keller International Award Exhibition
Please note: Due to essential maintenance work at the Collins Gallery, we have been informed that the Helen Keller International Award will have to close 2 days early.
The last day of the exhibition will now be Thursday 10th February 2005.
Run by Sense Scotland since 1992, the multi media art competition is open to any artist, with the only criterion being that work submitted must be on the subject of deafblindness.
The nine shortlisted artists are:

Limited Perception - Mixed media, by Gill Horn from England

The Lost Reels - Super 8 Film (presented on DVD) by Matthew Humphreys, Wales

The Conversation, Mixed media sculpture, Grace Newman, England

Touching Stillness, Ink & dough on card, Orly Orbach, England

Wee Man, Bronze sculpture, by Lewis Scott, Scotland

My Hand, Watercolour, by Safiya F, India

Touching Hands, Oil pastels on paper, by Gavin Wilson, Scotland
Judging process: Five judges met before the launch of the exhibition to decide on a shortlist. The winner will be announced at a ceremony on Monday 31st January. Due to the exceptional standards set by this year�s work the judges decided to extend the shortlist from six to nine. The award categories are:
- winner receiving trophy and £1,000
- two runners up each receiving £200
- three highly commended
- three commended
The identity of the artists was undisclosed until judging was complete. The judges were:
- Monica Callaghan - Head of Education Hunterian Museum
- Kenny Hunter - Artist
- Pauline McLean - BBC Arts correspondent
- Alex Robertson - Curator, Museum of Transport
- Kirsty White - Arts Development Officer for Social Inclusion, Glasgow City Council
"This year's shortlist showcases artists who have found unique approaches to the subject of deafblindness."
explained Lindsay Mitchell, Arts Manager for Sense Scotland.
"From sculptures and paintings by deafblind artists, mixed media installations using solidifying fat, to an evocative short film about an artist's father who is deaf and has recently gone blind, this represents the most exciting award yet. We hope a number of the shortlisted artists will attend the award ceremony on the 31st of January, when the winner is announced."
