Third Service User Conference
TouchBase Glasgow - October 2007

The third Service User Conference hosted by the service user consultation groupwas held on Thursday 4th October. The conference took place in TouchBase and it seemed fitting that the first conference in Touchbase should be this one. The courtyard provided an ideal space with available communication technology and an accessible personal care area proving that Touchbase can be considered a fully accessible conference venue.

The conference was both lively and well attended by service users and their support staff from the North, East and West of Scotland regions.

The programme was decided by the Service User Consultation Group members and included reports and presentations by the group.

Ailill Findlayson spoke about transport access and motability, Ewen Farquharson spoke about representation and voting, Yvonne Larkin followed by describing her successful lobbying of Durham Street’s local councillor to have barriers installed to prevent vehicles parking on the pavement, This demonstrated effective representation in practice. During the afternoon session, Murray Farquharson spoke about the use of video to give new support staff an idea of how independent a service user can be and provide a guide to the type of support needed. The final presentation was an update on the holiday information project launched at last year’s conference and this was given by Steph Clark.

During the day there were films highlighting visits, projects and service user activities and achievements throughout Scotland compiled by Andy Crossan, drama activities led by Jon Reid and a drumming event led by David McCluskey.

Service managers and administration staff provided the smoothie bar and refreshments throughout the day. The conference was followed by an Evening Party at The Swallow Hotel where music and dance were at the forefront of activities.
